Winning Entry - Chapter Six

A few of you guessed that this week’s author was Brian Falkner, sorry, not this time, it was Michele Powles. You can download Michele's FABO bookmark by clicking on the image.

Here's Michele's Author Report:

Hold onto your sparkling white crystal orbs and get on board the S.S. Flyinator because this week’s entries were grimplesnatcherable. I felt my heartbeat rocketing, my fingers twitching and all because there was so much tension and drama that I had a really hard time choosing a winner! A really really hard time.

But before we do anything else this week the FaBo team have to pass on a big congratulations to FaBo teacher Angela Thompson at Maungawhau School. Her students think she’s ace because she’s always giving up her time, helping type up entries, making certificates for entering FaBo, and best of all she encourages all her students to keep entering ‘cos their writing is getting better and better. Way to go Angela! This week’s results show that Angela is completely right because some of the very best stories come from writers who have been entering week after week. Congratulations to all who entered, take Angela Thompson’s advice and keep going!

Angela wins a prize this week... a copy of Kathy White's book Muffin Magic. Thanks Angela, and keep up the great work.

I’m starting with the junior writers this week because there was more than a blurgstonne of good writing from you all. I sat up straight as the backfire from Isabel St Baker’s story hit me in my imagination, I blurged as the bluey gluey gooey tentacles from Georgia Fyfe’s story slimed off the page and checked I had my glasses when Faith from Maungawhau School’s optometrist strolled onto the page. A super special mention for Izzie Locker for her disposal system sliming.

But because her entry was so Groobleingly good, I’m choosing Florence from Warrington School as this week’s junior winner. Who knew there were four substitutes for tinfoil? I just hope I don’t meet the Stigrid beast of Nwonk any time soon. Florence wins a Furry Fabo (what I think Giles probably really looks like under his gorilla suit) and a Booksellers Book Voucher.

In the Senior category, Caroline Moratti, Andy Xie and Angus Smith all had exceptional stories, sending our heroes to the zoo, onto spaceships and even killing them off! Some truly FaBo writing from all three. Special mention also to some writers with great story ideas: Hayley Coupe for her fundraising plans, Irie Simpson for a tinfoil tracking device and Danica Davies for an invisible space ship.

Despite my love of crystal orbs and sparkling space ships, this week’s Senior winner is Angus Smith whose new character James “Foil” Fenton and his tangles with the Maharajah of Pluto were truly FaBo. You win a copy of the Touch Compass book and a Booksellers Book Voucher.

Don’t forget to put your full name, age and school on your entries when you submit for next week; it really helps us to know if you are a 7 year old crystal salesperson or the 103 year old ruler of the planet Zorgure.

Chapter Six

by Florence

Lewis slapped a hand to his forehead “Cant we find a substitute?”

“hmm” mused Giles “there are four known substitutes for tin foil.”

“What are they?” asked Remy, a small ray of hope shining through his pessimistic mood.

“Ivory
from the Stigrid beast of Nwonk, feathers of the the Neerg bird of Knip,
hair of the singing Nioj of Tsal, and fur from the tip of the tail of the
mysterious Gnola from Elpats.”

“What?!” Lewis cried.

“We are doomed” sobbed
Remy who was starting to think he was being a tad melodramatic.

Suddenly a truck screamed round the corner , slammed on the breaks, lost its
balance, and rolled down the hill. The two gorillas were after it in a flash
and greeting the driver in a strange language that made no sense at all.

“Grooble squyshner!” “Ing tabooli?” Dnekeew kcoddap!!” “Tsettoh xof
esnecil?” “Liof nit” “Yay!!!” “Emosewa!!!!!”

“What are you exited about?” asked Remy, finally catching up with the
gorillas.

“His cargo was tin foil!!” Miranda shouted, “We can go back
home!!!”

“Oh can you?” said a voice from behind them that was calm yet full
of malice.

“Heaven help us now” whispered Miranda, “ Its a
grimplesnatcher!!”
